Halcyon Daze: An Exhibition of Abstract Painting and Collage by Rick Pirtle and Jim Blaha

Both artists tap into the zeitgeist of the Golden Age of Modernism, but through inspiration from different attitudes towards art and culture in the beginning decades of the 20th century.

Rick uses a bright synthetic palette and complex abstract space in the careful composition of his paintings. They have a glimmer of utopian enthusiasm for the potential of an unbounded expression that drives the work of his influences.

Jimís collages are assembled with a more frenetic than reflective method that leans toward the anarchic pragmatism of the Dada movement. His Life magazine collages have morphed from painted magazine covers to the current painted fragments that he arranges into finished pieces. The repetitive use of a small group of forms gives Jimís work a cohesiveness that shows a clarity of intention and the evolution of his work from collages into paintings have a contemporary aura that reflects his own technique and style.

Rick, too, has a repeating use of objects; windows, doors, tables, easels, and drinking glasses that operate as both metaphor and structural elements in his compositions. These elements, along with his bright palette, help him assemble a consistency of expression that reveals his own method of development.
